An integrated Hollis team has successfully advised the trust on a remedial strategy to overcome a problematic roof.

From instruction, we identified the construction of the building and the various flat roof build ups by taking core samples of the roof coverings with the assistance of a roofing contractor. We also undertook a 3D laser scan of the roof, producing a 1:100 scale roof plan indicating the structural details, the location of all existing roof plant and the locations of core samples that had been taken. We then carried out a ‘best-fit’ exercise to provide the client with an indication of the core sample locations relative to the lower floors.

The roofs are heavily fitted out with plant and equipment that serve the hospital below, so the key consideration of the project was the logistics of undertaking any recommended remedial works to the roof, given the critical M&E systems. Our specialist in-house engineers reviewed the existing condition, projected the remaining life span of the equipment and devised a colour coded relocation and replacement strategy. This was reviewed in conjunction with our recommended repair works and gave the client a complete picture of the logistics required to undertake the repairs.

As part of our instruction, we have provided budget advice and considered the statutory implications that would affect the proposed works such as planning law, the Building Regulations and the Control of Asbestos Regulations.

The client is currently reviewing their budget before proceeding with the works.
