This year, the 15 July marks the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day. This global event focuses on youth employability and equipping them with tools, knowledge and competencies needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving world of work.

In an era marked by technological advancement, volatile economies, and unprecedented challenges, the need to nurture adaptable, creative, and technically proficient youth has never been more pressing.

Vicki Palmer, Head of CSR and Emerging Talent, underscored this:

“World Youth Skills Day is more important than ever as young people face a rapidly changing world of work. At Hollis, supporting youth and wider society is a core value that runs through everything we do. We’ve seen this with consistent backing from our CEO, Andy Hay and leadership team to invest in initiatives that open doors for the next generation. We’re focused on creating real, accessible routes into the industry for young people from all backgrounds.”

To recognise the day, we’re proud to highlight our collaboration with Pathways to Property (P2P).

Pathways to Property: Building Skills for the Built Environment

Pathways to Property is one of our key educational partners, with a sole focus on opening doors for young people interested in the property sector. Their mission is to break down barriers for young people from underrepresented backgrounds who have limited access to the industry – a topic close to our hearts.

Together, we are working to educate and inspire by providing young people with the essential skills and knowledge necessary for success within the industry.

Over the last 5 years in our partnership with P2P, we have participated in:

  • Summer School: Every year, P2P host a 4-day summer school programme, hosting year 12 students as they take part in taster lectures, a site visit and career advice. We lend our expertise to this programme by helping run the various sessions over the course of the week.
  • Online Workshops: Due to high demand at the summer school with 1000+ applications, we’ve participated in online sessions for those that were not offered a place.
  • Work Experience: Over the past five years, we’ve hosted five students each October half term for work experience across our offices. This approach enables participants to fully engage in the experience and gain invaluable hands-on skills.

Volunteering: A Catalyst for Change

This year, we supported this valuable initiative during its annual summer school at the University of Reading.

Volunteers from various departments and levels participated, providing students with diverse perspectives and learning opportunities. The programme is designed to educate young individuals on the complexities of the real estate sector, but we really valued the opportunity to also gain inspiration and energy from engaging with these aspiring professionals.

Here’s what our volunteers had to say:

“What makes programmes like this so important is how they expose participants to the wide range of roles available in the built environment. Ultimately, the biggest takeaway for the young people is confidence which helps them to believe they can apply themselves, and that they truly belong in this industry.”

Leo wax (Emerging Talent Specialist)

“At the Pathways to Property Summer School, I had the chance to speak with students who were genuinely passionate about the real estate industry. It was great to support them with their project ideas and offer some guidance. Even in just one day, it was clear how much confidence and insight they were gaining.”

Amy Boms (Project Manager)

“Having graduated from Reading University, I was intrigued to find out what was influencing young students. Programs such as these raise awareness and give insight into what working in real estate really involves, whilst also providing an access point for students to learn and aspire towards a career in the industry.”

Mary Utley (Building Surveyor)

Our CEO and proactive volunteer, Andy Hay, beautifully concludes the Hollis stance:

“Volunteering is nothing unfamiliar to me, but Pathways to Property was something else entirely. The energy, creativity, and ambition of these young people was inspiring, and a clear signal that our industry must do more. At Hollis, we’re committed to opening doors and backing the next generation, helping to shape a more inclusive and accessible future for real estate.”

We’re committed to ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities for all youth, which is why we volunteer our time to facilitate these sessions and remove barriers to knowledge.

Looking To the Future

Volunteering with programs like P2P contributes to the development of emerging talent, but it’s just scratching the surface. At Hollis, we are dedicated to sustained efforts that advance the built environment sector while preparing for the integration of future creative professionals and innovators.
