People’s safety and health come first on any project. But getting your health and safety commitments right is also a key factor in delivering efficient, compliant and commercially successful outcomes. We have the knowledge and experience to look after all your construction and corporate health and safety requirements.
We can act as Principal Designer under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, or as your CDM Advisor, supporting you in meeting your statutory obligations. Alongside this, we provide Clerk of Works services to monitor quality, compliance, and workmanship on site. Working closely with the wider Hollis team, we also advise on environmental, health and safety considerations for property transactions and corporate acquisitions.
We’re SSIP-accredited consultants under the Safe Contractor certification scheme. Our team are members of the Association for Project Safety (APS) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.
We can assist in reviewing or writing your health and safety policies; and deliver training to make sure your teams have the knowledge and awareness they need.
We’re always innovating — using drone technology to provide safer outcomes, or integrating BIM and Common Data Environments to give the right people the right information 24/7.
We currently have certifications:
- ISO 45001:2018 – Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems
- ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental Management Systems
- ISO 9001:2015 - Quality Management Systems.
We are also a Constructionline Gold Member, and hold SSIP accreditation for the roles of Principal Designer and CDM Advisor.
A Clerk of Works helps keep safety on track by acting as an independent, on-site quality and compliance watchdog throughout construction.
In practical terms, they are the client’s “eyes and ears” on site - regularly inspecting work, identifying risks early, and ensuring that what is being built matches both the design intent and statutory safety requirements. This proactive presence reduces the likelihood of accidents, defects, and costly re-work later in the project lifecycle.
Key ways a Clerk of Works supports safety:
- Regular site inspections – Frequent, structured inspections help spot unsafe practices, poor workmanship, or non-compliant materials before they escalate into hazards.
- Early risk identification – By monitoring day-to-day activity, a Clerk of Works can highlight health and safety risks, fire-stopping gaps, or structural concerns at the moment they arise.
- Compliance monitoring – They check that works align with regulations such as CDM 2015, building regulations, and project specifications.
- Defect and non-conformance reporting – Clear, impartial reporting ensures contractors correct issues promptly, maintaining both safety and build quality.
- Coordination with project teams – Working alongside project managers, surveyors and fire safety specialists creates a joined-up approach to risk control.
- Quality assurance as prevention – High build quality is itself a safety measure; fewer defects mean fewer future failures, maintenance risks, or operational hazards.
Why this matters:
Safety on construction projects is not just about hard hats and signage - it is about designing-in quality and verifying it continuously. A Clerk of Works provides independent oversight that helps protect people, assets and reputations while keeping programmes and budgets stable. Their presence supports better governance, stronger accountability, and safer project outcomes overall.
